How Do You Rack Wine
Take your old wine rack and turn it into a ready to go wrapping station with spots for bows paper ribbon and probably some name tags so you remember who the hell you re giving the gift to.
How do you rack wine. In this second step of the wine making process see how to rack your wine off of the sediment in preparation for secondary fermentation. You ll want to take. A hose will have a tendency to move around and draw from places you don t want it to like in the sediment. When making wine from fresh fruit you ll want to rack within seven days or so of pitching your yeast to get off of the gross lees.
This is the most critical racking and can be a make or break situation for the wine. Depending on the amount of wine you re making you may need a significant amount of space to do this or just a tabletop and the floor of your kitchen. Place the wine that you wish to rack on a raised surface. This is the chunky fruit lees that collects at the bottom of your fermentation vessel.
If your wine is left on the gross lees for too long you ll pick up off flavors and aromas. The gross lees at this point consist mostly of fruit pulp. You can rack your wine with nothing more than a length of food grade hose but this can get a little tricky especially when you get down to the end of the siphon.
