How To Drain A Hot Water Tank Without A Drain Valve
Steps for draining a water heater.
How to drain a hot water tank without a drain valve. You should not need to rely upon the pressure relief valve of the heater. Before you shut off the water connect a garden hose to the drain valve and try and flush the water heater tank a bit while the water pressure is on to do this open the drain valve for a few seconds and then close it again. The pressure will blow out any sediment stuck in the valve and help the tank drain faster. Perform a quick flush.
Go back to the hot water tap opened earlier. Once the water runs clear from the end of the hose you can close the valve to allow the tank to heat up. The tank will begin to fill. Or have a back flow valve in a wrong place.
When opening the valve you should be careful as the water could be hot. Rigged up a rube goldberg system with funnels pans and buckets and got most of it out but this is ridiculous. Now you may open the drain valve and let the water drain from the water heater tank. Then open the pressure relief valve on the tank and connect a long garden hose to the drain valve.
What you need is an explanation tank or locate the back flow valve in the right place on your water lines. You must be on city water line. Shut the hot water faucet off the one you opened in your house. Once the water in the heater has cooled turn the cold water intake valve off and run some hot water from a faucet in your house to empty out excess water in the pipes.
When the tank is full turn the water heater back on. Turn the water to the tank back on while the drain spigot is still open to remove any remaining sediment. All you need is an expansion tank. Close the drain valve remove the hose and turn on the cold water supply.
Turn on the water tap on the hot side. This help in alleviating the pressure in the water heater system. I tried pumping out. Dont deal with these much tending to stay away from anything that could leak water but recently i had a call on a 10 gallon with a bad element and no drain valve.
